The photo doesn't do justice to the place and I'm very sorry for that. There are some better pictures on the net of this gloomy place and in this type of weather it really frightens you. You can't see what it's like: a deep, deep abyss, 600 feet deep... When you're there you will understand that the photograph is all wrong... It has its name from the usage by the old Border Reivers. They hid their stolen cattle and sheep in here when they returned from their raids.
But also: a Highlander, fleeing from his enemies during the rebelliion of '45. Wrapping himself tightly in his plaid, he plunged over the top and bounced/rolled/crashed downwards while a hail of bullets followed him on his journey. Black and blue he actually survived his flight...
